July can be sleepy, but last month the Brim team was working hard! We’re excited to share two new features that make Brim even more powerful for researchers and clinical teams: a new Validation Tool to improve reliability, and REDCap Export to bring your research workflow full circle. Together, these updates help you move faster, measure more accurately, and integrate Brim with the tools you already trust.
🧪 Validate with Confidence: Brim’s New Comparison Tool
Many researchers start by comparing Brim-generated data to a “golden” dataset, whether that’s a manually curated abstraction or a reference file from a previous study. Now, Brim makes that process seamless with our new Validation Tool.
With just a few clicks, you can:
- Instantly measure agreement between your Brim output and a comparison dataset
- Track improvements over time as you iterate on your variable definitions
- Guard against data drift by periodically reviewing a sample
Upload a CSV of your reference data, and Brim will automatically calculate agreement every time you generate new abstractions. You’ll find the Validation Tool on the Project Setup page and in the Settings menu.
✨ Why we built this:
- Many Brim customers begin by comparing Brim to a curated dataset. This tool makes that workflow smoother and more standardized.
- It also supports a critical best practice: iterating on a small dataset before scaling to the full corpus.

🔁 Full-Circle REDCap Integration: Import and Export
REDCap is where many research projects begin and end. With our new REDCap export feature, Brim now fits even more seamlessly into your workflow.
You can now:
- Import variables from your REDCap data dictionary
- Generate and review abstractions in Brim
- Export structured data back into REDCap with a single click
This makes it easier than ever to integrate Brim into your existing research process, no copy-paste required.
Fun fact: Brim is named as a friendly nod to REDCap: it’s the Brim of the hat. Both projects have roots at Vanderbilt, and we’re proud to support the ecosystem so many researchers rely on.
